Pink Shirt Day – Standing up Against Bullying. The students, teachers and staff came together and wore something pink to be unified in joining other schools and communities across Canada to say no to Bullying. On Wednesday, February 26th, schools across Canada acknowledged Pink Shirt Day.
Pink Shirt Day Originated in Nova Scotia. When a few Grade 12 students saw that a Grade 9 student was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. They felt the need to do something and take a stand, to say that this type of behaviour was not ok and would not be tolerated.
They decided to do something about it, they purchased pink shirts and distributed these shirts for students to wear, to stand up for this Grade 9 Student. Towards the end of the week, there were quite a few students were wearing pink shirts to stand together to show the school that bullying was not accepted. This gesture grew in our communities.
The theme for this year’s pink shirt day was, “Lift each other up”; a simple but powerful message, that shows us that we should not only embrace each other’s differences but they should be celebrated because these are the things that make us unique. We are a school culture that prides ourselves on inclusion and a positive balanced environment for learning and working.
Although wearing a pink shirt on Pink Shirt Day is a great way to show you are against bullying, it’s important that we all stand up against any kind of bullying every day, all year long!
